If you and your family do not have the proper health coverage, you are rolling the dice and simply hoping that nothing goes wrong. That might be a great way to live if you are living in the perfect world, but there are always going to be risks if you do not have proper health insurance. Even if you can only afford catastrophic health coverage, that is better than going with nothing at all. Not every employer offers free health insurance, so sometimes it is up to the head of the family to take care of the spouse and kids by buying some form of health insurance even if it only covers the basics.
In today’s market, health coverage has become harder to afford with skyrocketing health insurance rates and most employers having to have employees pay more for their coverage. Although high, most employers offer an HMO instead of the traditional health coverage to lower payments.
Health care is a lot harder to afford, not only for employees, but also for businesses that have to pay for the health coverage. An HMO (health maintenance organizations) offer a list of doctors or hospitals are listed in the HMO benefits books, but they might not be the one that you want to use in times of emergency whether it is you or someone in your family. A traditional health care plan lets you decide the doctor you want to use or the hospital of your choice rather than making you depend on the doctors or hospitals listed in your HMOP manual.
Medical coverage can also differ from plan to plan. Normally health insurance caps the amount you have to spend out of pocket for an illness. That amount will vary according to the plan. Some plans offer copays on doctor, emergency room or urgent care visits. The fees can range from $10 for doctor’s visit to $35 or on up and much more for urgent care and ER visits.
If you are not covered by your employer and are suffering through today’s difficult economic times, the least you can do for your family is to make sure that you are covered for catastrophic illnesses or injury. That might lead to a high deductible, but it is the least you can do for you and your family.
